Our article this month — ‘Frances Ridley Havergal; the ministry of song’ is from page 14 of the current (July) issue of ET and celebrates the life of one who was a significant figures of the Victorian era on both sides of the Atlantic. Although she died at the early age of 42, the spiritual legacy of hymns and other writings she left was immense. C. H. Spurgeon called her ‘the last and loveliest of our modern poets’.

July’s ETfeatures the new Youth Supplement written (mainly) by teenagers for teenagers. Articles include: School CUs — why bother?; University Christian Unions; Smart dating; Spooks; Marathon man; Really forgiven?; No lightning flash!; The point of it all; and Why pray? Required reading for young people!

Also in July’s ET — are two important articles on preaching. ‘The Spirit and the Word in preaching’ by Guy Davies, reminds us that the Word preached is ineffective without the accompanying blessing of God’s Holy Spirit, while ‘The power to save’ by Miles McKee argues that Christians need to hear the gospel message regularly, not just the unsaved. Much food here for thought and prayer!

Internet Edition — Do you live in Australia? Or in USA perhaps? What about South Africa? Or anywhere else in the world outside the British Isles? Then the Internet Edition of Evangelical Times is for you! You can download the full 32 page Evangelical Times newspaper every month for around US$12 for a whole year (12 issues) and without paying a penny for international postage costs! It comes to you on your computer screen rather than as a printed paper — avoiding the cost and uncertainty of the mail. Although the Internet Edition is designed to be read on-screen you can print out any pages or articles you wish. You pay by credit card using the ultra-secure WorldPay system. Evangelical Times International (ETI) — is the 16 page airmail edition of Evangelical Times that is sent overseas to anyone who is willing to distribute five or more copies in their locality. The paper itself is free of charge but the distributors (or agents) pay for the airmail postage. Some agents have UK ‘sponsors’ who pay the postage on their behalf.

The idea behind ETI is that affordable reformed literature is often unavailable in third-world countries and this paper is one way to fill this gap. However, ETI also circulates in places like USA and Australia where there is nothing quite like Evangelical Times available.

Is this ministry effective? Does it justify the cost and effort involved? Yes, and from time to time we receive letters from agents that make it all very worth while! Her is an example that we hope will encourage readers to pray for and support this work.

How can you help? First, by sending ET the names and addresses of people overseas who might be interested in becoming agents. Second, by agreeing to sponsor one or more agents who cannot afford to pay the postage.

Pastor Daniel Kimeu writes from Kenya:

Grace to you and peace from God the Father and our blessed Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. I hope you are well kept of the Lord.

Thanks a lot for both your letter dated 1 November 2007 and the 100 copies of ETI. I am sorry for not replying to your letter earlier but I had not paid for my Post Office Box for November and December, so I couldn’t receive my letters till the end of January. I have worked hard to pay and I can once again receive my letters as normal.

We are benefiting so much in reading this ET International. Therefore I congratulate you so much for your good vision of reaching many people with this Christian literature — especially like us who are far off and missing such biblical literature around us.

Many now here are able to get the true biblical teaching in these papers, even people we couldn’t reach in normal evangelism. The good God continue to strengthen you for this noble task. The Lord be glorified in this ministry.

For now I am not going to provide other contact names, because the people who are ready for and needing the papers, I can reach by working in a local way — which I think is going to be cheaper than you sending to them directly from UK. Those whom I find difficulties to reach, I will sent to you their contact details.

We are praying for you and for all your ministry. Pray for us as well, and above all for spiritual effect of the gospel preaching. Thanks a lot my dear brethren!

Your brother in Kenya and your fellow labourer in Christ Jesus.

                                                        Pastor Daniel W. Kimeu
